On May 12th, 2025, in the heart of Turin, the DIVETOUR2 project took a significant step forward. We held a dynamic workshop exploring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) with young vocational education and training (VET) learners. Hosted at ENGIM, a key VET provider in the city, this session was more than just training—it was a conversation, a reflection, and an exploration of future careers.
Bluebook led the workshop alongside the ENGIM team, which included a dedicated teacher and two EU project managers. Together, we aimed to understand how these essential concepts resonate with learners, encourage personal reflections, and gather valuable insights, questions, and suggestions.
We kicked off with an engaging ice-breaker to create a warm and open atmosphere. Then, we transitioned into lively discussions on key project terminology, assessing learners’ initial familiarity and personal experiences.
What we discovered
DEI: recognized in practice, not always by name
Only one of the eleven participants knew the acronym “DEI,” having encountered it in a workplace safety course. However, their personal stories showed that they had experienced DEI principles firsthand. Many hesitated to elaborate, highlighting the need for even safer spaces where sensitive experiences can be openly discussed. This revealed a gap between lived experiences and formal terminology, emphasizing the need for clearer communication.
AI: familiar but mysterious
While learners widely recognized “AI,” most had only used it passively and didn’t understand how it works. Many admitted they were unfamiliar with the concept of a “prompt.” Their most positive AI experience involved translation tools. However, when we introduced interactive simulations—such as AI-powered job interviews, website analysis tools, and musical text generation—their curiosity grew. This hands-on approach moved them from passive users to active explorers.
Tourism, VET, and Erasmus+: unclear definitions?
Learners had a limited understanding of broad terms like “Tourism” and “VET” within the project’s scope. Erasmus+ was well-known as a training opportunity abroad, but its deeper objectives—personal development, cultural exchange, and European citizenship—were less understood.
Key takeaways and next steps
Demystifying key concepts
We are committed to making terms like DEI, AI, VET, and Tourism more accessible. By connecting them to learners’ daily lives and career goals, we will break down complex ideas into relatable scenarios.
Creating safe spaces for DEI conversations
To encourage open discussion on discrimination and inclusion, we will strengthen trust and build supportive environments. Anonymous feedback and carefully facilitated discussions will help ensure every voice feels heard and valued.
Empowering AI literacy
We will focus on demystifying AI’s mechanics and introducing learners to “prompt engineering.” This will empower them to be active creators rather than passive users. We’ll showcase diverse GenAI applications relevant to their future careers and provide more hands-on learning experiences.
Expanding Erasmus+ awareness
We will highlight Erasmus+ as more than just an international training program. By emphasizing its role in personal growth, skill enhancement, and cultural exchange, we will show learners how mastering concepts like DEI and AI can be valuable career assets.
Building a collaborative future
This workshop reinforced the importance of engaging activities, diverse learning methods, and ample opportunities for Q&A. Follow-up sessions and reinforcement will be key to solidifying these lessons.
At DIVETOUR2, we remain dedicated to nurturing VET professionals who are not only skilled in their fields but also aware of DEI and proficient in AI. Our journey continues, driven by collaboration and a shared vision for a more equitable and innovative future.
